abaft - in the aft direction; towards the stern of the ship.
addled – confused.
Admiral of the Black – a leader of a fleet of pirate ships. Some references I’ve read restrict this usage solely to refer to the head of the Brethren of the Coast.
aft – towards the back of the ship.
ahoy – an interjection used to grab attention, as in “ship ahoy!” or “ahoy there!”
anchor – a heavy object attached to a ship or boat by means of a cable or chain, dropped into the water to restrict the motion of the vessel.
arrrrr – a general purpose pirate exclamation. Depending on inflection, it can be used to indicate a variety of meanings.
athwartships – from one side of a ship to the other, as opposed to from front to back. At right angles to an imaginary line connecting the stern with the bow.
avast - an exclamation indicating the listener should stop what he is doing. A pirate telling you “Avast there!” would mean he would prefer that you desist in your current action.
aye – Used to indicate agreement: (Pirate: “Rum?” Pirate 2: “Aye.”) Two ayes together (”Aye, aye!”) indicate receipt of an order. (Pirate Captain: “Hoist the mainsail!” Pirate crew: “Aye, aye!”)
